Massie targets AIPAC with new legislation on Nazi-era law

AIPAC’s Political Influence Under Scrutiny

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliates are known to spend tens of millions of dollars on U.S. elections, with the aim of getting hard-line supporters of Israel elected across both major political parties.

Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican, has a notable score of 86.79% from Turning Point Action. As AIPAC aims to support candidates in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, Massie has introduced legislation that would bring AIPAC under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938.

Massie emphasizes that this law is really about transparency. It requires certain agents who represent foreign interests to register with the Department of Justice and to disclose their activities and finances.

With a long history, FARA was initially established to limit Nazi Germany’s influence in the U.S. The push for AIPAC to register under this act has gained traction, although some argue that AIPAC is not foreign, claiming it’s an “American pro-Israel lobby.”

Massie expressed concerns about the current state of affairs, saying that AIPAC enjoys a sort of immunity. He believes that the money used in politics and lobbying should be reported regardless of the foreign country involved, whether it’s Israel or others like Turkey or Qatar.

He further clarified that the proposed Political Agent Clarity Act does not restrict free speech or advocacy among Americans; it simply aims for transparency, especially if the organization is heavily influencing U.S. policies in favor of foreign nations.

The AIPAC Act seeks to ensure a U.S.-based organization can be classified as a foreign principal if its lobbying primarily benefits a foreign power. It would also establish specific criteria for judging political alliances and allow American citizens to file complaints with the Department of Justice regarding potential FARA violations by these organizations.

Massie has also voiced concerns over his Republican challenger, Ed Gullane, who he alleges has financial backing from prominent Israeli billionaires. Reports indicate that AIPAC and the Republican Jewish Federation have spent over $9.8 million trying to support Gullane in his campaign.

Interestingly, Massie has been critical of U.S. military aid to Israel, which has surprisingly garnered him support from AIPAC’s circles.

AIPAC has yet to comment on these developments.
