Waymo cars overwhelm Atlanta neighborhood cul-de-sacs because of a routing error

Waymo Faces Navigation Challenges in Atlanta Neighborhood

A neighborhood in Atlanta has been experiencing more issues with Waymo’s driverless vehicles than anticipated. Over the past few weeks, numerous empty rideshare cars have been spotted in Buckhead, a district in northwest Atlanta, apparently due to navigation errors.

One resident on Battle View Drive shared their concerns, stating, “It’s a problem because it seems to affect almost every cul-de-sac in the area.” This was echoed by another neighbor who noted that between 6 and 7 AM the previous day, around 50 Waymo cars had passed by.

There are reports of these autonomous vehicles repeatedly circling a cul-de-sac, which has led to traffic headaches as residents attempted to redirect the cars. “It’s not just annoying,” another neighbor said. “We have kids and pets, and during the morning rush, it makes us feel unsafe with the extra traffic congestion.”

Waymo operates in 11 cities across the U.S., including Atlanta, and has acknowledged the issues to Fox News Digital. They mentioned that while they’re frequently called in certain parts of the city, they aim to ensure residents’ needs aren’t overlooked.

“We’re committed to being good neighbors and value community feedback,” the company stated. They highlighted that their services significantly contribute to reducing traffic-related injuries and improve overall safety. Waymo aims to maintain a positive relationship with the residents of Atlanta.

However, problems extend beyond cul-de-sacs. Recently, Waymo announced a recall of about 4,000 vehicles due to a defect that could cause them to fail to stop before encountering “standing water.” Additionally, footage revealed a Waymo vehicle running a red light at a busy intersection in Dallas.

In the previous year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into Waymo after reports of one of its vehicles illegally overtaking a parked school bus in Austin, Texas. Moreover, in January, a Waymo car struck a student in a crosswalk near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California; fortunately, the vehicle was moving slowly and no injuries were reported.
