Trump Critiques Sen. Cassidy Ahead of Louisiana Primary

In the lead-up to the Louisiana primary, President Donald Trump criticized Senator Bill Cassidy, calling him a “dishonest disaster.”

“Bill Cassidy is a despicable, terrible man and bad for Louisiana,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social. He added, “Now he is going to win a big election today with two great people!!!”

Louisiana voters headed to the polls Saturday to choose which two candidates will compete in the state Senate general election this November.

Senator Cassidy (R-Louisiana), who has been in office since 2015, faces off against Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, U.S. Representative Julia Letlow (R-Louisiana), and Mark Spencer, a local business owner.

According to a recent Emerson College poll conducted from April 24th to 26th, 28% of likely Republican primary voters supported Fleming, just ahead of Letlow. Cassidy’s approval rating was at 21%, with 22% undecided and 2% favoring Spencer.

Trump endorsed Letlow, emphasizing to voters, “vote your vote today for Julia L. She’s a winner who will never let you down.”

On the Democratic side, candidates include Navy veteran Gary Crockett, former policy adviser Nick Alvarez, and row crop farmer Jamie Davis Jr., all seeking to gain seats in November.

Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority of 53-45 in the House. In the Senate, Republicans have 22 seats up for reelection, while Democrats have 13.

Notably, Cassidy was among just seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump in early 2021 following his impeachment related to the January 6 insurrection. Although he has backed Trump’s policies in the past, he has been critical of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who heads the Department of Health and Human Services.

Voting in Louisiana is set to close at 8 PM local time.
