On Sunday, Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, remarked that the recent primary defeat of Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana illustrates a lack of tolerance within the Republican Party for those who challenge or undermine former President Donald Trump.
During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Graham suggested that Cassidy’s loss was directly linked to his vote to convict Trump in a 2021 impeachment trial. He warned that Republicans who attempt to “destroy” Trump politically will likely face backlash from party voters. “This party has no room for those who want to undermine Trump or his policies,” Graham emphasized. He specifically pointed out that if individuals align with Democrats to oppose Trump’s agenda, like Representative Thomas Massie, they risk losing their political standing.
“Those who seek to undermine Trump politically and obstruct his policies will find themselves at a loss,” he asserted, reiterating, “This is Donald Trump’s party.” This statement came after host Kristen Welker asked Graham if Cassidy’s defeat was a clear sign that dissension had little place in the current Republican landscape.
Cassidy has served in the Senate since 2015 and was one of seven Republican senators who voted for Trump’s conviction following the events of January 6. Although Trump was acquitted due to the Senate’s failure to reach the two-thirds majority required, Cassidy maintained that Trump’s actions were unconstitutional and dangerous.
Graham acknowledged a personal respect for Cassidy and praised his Senate contributions but noted that voting for impeachment likely has dire political consequences, especially in a Republican primary. He stated, “While I think highly of Bill, that vote effectively sealed his fate in the political arena.”
He also framed Trump’s presence in the party as a beneficial influence for future electoral efforts, saying, “If you’re attempting to damage his legacy, you’ll find yourself destroyed too. It’s simply the nature of the game.” He expressed gratitude towards Trump for aiding his re-election, calling it a “good reality.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Senator Cassidy for response but did not get an immediate reply.
