Fundraiser for security guard killed in mosque shooting in San Diego exceeds $1 million

A fundraising effort has emerged following a tragic shooting at the San Diego Islamic Center, where a security guard, Amin Abdullah, was fatally shot as he tried to protect the community. This campaign has already garnered nearly $2 million in under 24 hours.

The unfortunate event occurred on a Monday, with police stating that Abdullah’s quick actions helped prevent the attack from worsening. “Please join us in honoring his legacy,” the LaunchGood page stated, illustrating the community’s deep respect for Abdullah.

With a goal of $2.2 million, the funds raised aim to cover not only Abdullah’s funeral expenses but also support his family, who have lost their primary financial provider. Reports indicate he was a devoted father to eight children, and some of the donations will help secure educational resources and long-term financial stability for his family, as well as necessary counseling services.

The feelings expressed by community members highlight Abdullah’s commitment. “He didn’t shy away. He stood his ground,” noted the LaunchGood page, calling him a “martyr.” San Diego Police Chief Scott Wall acknowledged the crucial role that security personnel played in minimizing the danger during the shooting.

In addition to Abdullah, two local residents, Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, lost their lives during this incident. The attack unfolded around 11:43 a.m., and fortunately, no students or staff from the nearby school were harmed.

Another fundraiser, organized under the Official ICSD Victim and Family Support Fund, has raised close to $1 million to assist those affected directly by the shooting. This fund aims to ensure transparency and accountability, focusing solely on verified channels for donations.

Amid these painful events, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed solidarity with the San Diego Muslim community, stating that, “There is no place for hate in California.” The entire community seems to rally around a message of support and remembrance during this challenging time.
