Indiana Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Good Samaritans
In a tragic incident on Mother’s Day, an Indiana man is facing serious charges after allegedly fatally shooting two men who attempted to assist his girlfriend as he dragged her down a sidewalk.
The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Monday that Rylin Joshua Davis is charged with murder, attempted murder, kidnapping with serious bodily injury, aggravated assault, confinement while armed, reckless conduct, domestic violence, and neglect of a dependent, related to the death of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Cheyenne Raines. Reports indicate he has been linked to the events that unfolded on May 10.
According to law enforcement, Davis, 21, chased Raines after reportedly striking her as she fled from their home in Muncy, about 90 miles northeast of Indianapolis, around 5:30 p.m.
Davis allegedly caught up to Raines, struck her again, and forcibly pulled her back into their home while dragging her by the leg.
Two bystanders in a Dodge pickup observed the distressing scene. Michael Hennessy, 40, initially thought it was a harmless interaction, but when he realized the situation was serious, he and his co-worker, Jeremy McKee, 39, stopped to help.
During the ensuing confrontation, Davis reportedly fired shots at Hennessy’s vehicle, hitting both men. Hennessy recalled running to the scene and seeing both McKee and Raines on the ground, stating it felt like he had been hit with a baseball bat when he turned to assess the situation.
Davis aimed his gun at Raines before retreating back home. When emergency responders arrived, they found three victims of gunfire outside the residence.
Raines was pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds. McKee suffered a head injury and remains hospitalized, while Hennessy was shot in the abdomen but was released a week later.
Davis surrendered to authorities after officers surrounded his home. In an unsettling discovery, police found three young children, aged three months, two months, and another three months, locked in a room described as “covered in dirt and feces,” in alarming conditions.
During questioning, Davis claimed he exchanged words with the two men before firing shots. He denied intentionally shooting Raines and asserted that the gun belonged to her while insisting he was acting in self-defense.
Reports indicated that Raines had attempted to leave Davis a few days prior but was physically restrained. On Mother’s Day, she tried to escape again when the tragic incident occurred.
Davis is currently being held without bail in the Delaware County Jail, and no initial hearing date has been established. If convicted of murder, he could face up to 65 years in prison.
