Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence

Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation from her role as Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The decision stems from her husband’s recent diagnosis of a rare form of bone cancer.

She communicated her choice to President Donald Trump during a meeting at the Oval Office on Friday. Gabbard’s final day at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence will be June 30.

In her resignation letter, she expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to serve in her position over the past year and a half. However, she noted that family health matters had compelled her to shift her focus.

“Regrettably, I must submit my resignation effective June 30, 2026,” she stated. “My husband Abraham was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer.”

Gabbard acknowledged the tough journey ahead, highlighting that her husband “faces significant challenges in the coming weeks and months.” This realization pushed her to prioritize her family’s needs above her professional commitments.

“At this time, I must step away from public life to be by his side and fully support him through this fight,” she remarked. “Abraham has been my rock throughout our 11-year marriage. He has stood by me during my deployment to East Africa, throughout various political campaigns, and now while serving in this role.”

She also mentioned how his unwavering support has been crucial for her, stating, “His strength and love have sustained me through every hardship.” Gabbard felt it would be impossible to continue in her demanding role while knowing her husband needed her support.

In her conversation with the president, she assured him that her exit would be managed in a way that wouldn’t disrupt national security operations.

“We are fully committed to ensuring a smooth and thorough transition in the coming weeks to avoid any disruption to the leadership or momentum of you and your team,” she explained. “Thank you for your understanding during this very personal and challenging time for our family.”

She concluded with a note of gratitude, saying, “I will forever be grateful to you and the American people for the deep honor of serving our country as DNI.”
