Man receives life sentence for murdering aunt due to a clogged toilet

California Man Sentenced After Brutal Murder of Aunt

A man in California was sentenced to 25 years in prison this week for murdering his aunt during a conflict over a clogged toilet. Christopher Kaulaity’s outburst in the courtroom shocked relatives, who had gathered for the sentencing.

In April, a jury found Kaulaity guilty of killing Maria Carmen Torres on December 7, 2024, and using a deadly weapon in the attack. They ultimately dismissed his insanity defense.

When questioned by investigators, Kaulaity likened the murder to a childhood experience. “It reminded me of my childhood again,” he recalled. “Because when I was a kid, I would carve Play-Doh dolls and use sticks to poke them.”

He described how he grabbed a knife to kill his aunt “butcher-style,” even referencing the character Norman Bates from the film “Psycho.”

During the hearing in Bakersfield, tensions escalated as Kaulaity confronted family members, saying, “I hope you rot in hell with your sister, man.”

The tragic murder unfolded in a home shared by Torres and seven other adults. The day before, an argument erupted over the clogged toilet, heightening the family tensions.

According to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, warnings circulated among family members that Kaulaity and his aunt might have to leave the house if conflicts continued.

On the day of the incident, as Torres was heading toward the bathroom, Kaulaity hurled a homophobic slur at her. Prosecutors stated that while Torres was inside the bathroom, Kaulaity fetched pepper spray and a knife. He then forcefully entered the bathroom, used the pepper spray on her to incapacitate her, and subsequently stabbed her multiple times in the back and neck.

Afterward, Kaulaity called 911 to report the stabbing, leading deputies to his arrest at the scene.

Reports also mentioned that Kaulaity’s sister indicated her brother had been striving to leave a toxic environment, contemplating job opportunities and even possibly returning to a homeless shelter. Throughout the trial, he spoke about his struggles with abuse and mental health issues over many years.
