Packers Coach Addresses Josh Jacobs’ Arrest
Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Packers, has chosen not to delve into the specifics regarding the arrest of star running back Josh Jacobs, who faces five charges, including domestic violence.
“There are a lot of questions about Josh, but I’m just going to stick with what we’ve said as an organization and let the legal process play out,” LaFleur mentioned to reporters.
He avoided addressing whether the team is preparing for the potential absence of their starting tailback or when they believe the matter might be resolved.
“I think a lot will happen between now and then,” he added.
Jacobs, 28, turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, leading to his arrest in Wisconsin. His mugshot has been released, as reported by the NFL Network.
The Hobart-Lawrence Police Department indicated it received a nuisance complaint regarding Jacobs at 8:37 a.m. on Saturday.
The charges against him include assault, criminal damage to property, disturbing the peace, strangulation and suffocation, as well as intimidation of the victim.
The Brown County District Attorney has stated they are still gathering information before making a final charging decision, and Jacobs has since been released from custody.
Jacobs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schoenfeld, asserted on Tuesday that he “vehemently denies” the charges and mentioned that “significant” evidence is still awaiting release.
In their release on Wednesday, they expressed relief at his release and pointed out that no criminal charges have yet been filed.
“As we previously stated, we encourage everyone to keep an open mind until this matter is fully considered,” the attorneys’ statement read. “We are confident that once all the evidence is collected and evaluated, it will confirm that no further charges should be brought against Josh.”
The Packers acknowledged the situation in a statement on Tuesday but, like LaFleur, opted not to provide further details. However, the NFL confirmed it has been in touch with the team regarding the incident.
Depending on how things progress with the investigation, Jacobs could face suspension from his role.
LaFleur reiterated the team’s commitment to maintaining high standards.
“We always have high expectations here, and our players have done a solid job during my time,” LaFleur remarked. “(General Manager) Brian (Gutekunst) and his staff excel at assessing character and bringing in good individuals.”
Jacobs has just wrapped up his second season with the Packers and has two years remaining on a four-year, $48 million contract he signed before the 2024 season.
Notably, he is not required to pay a deposit.
If Jacobs is suspended, the Packers will have limited proven options behind him in Chris Brooks, Marshwan Lloyd, and Pierre Strong Jr. on the depth chart.
“I like our players, but it’s definitely not enough,” LaFleur acknowledged.
