Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Says He Was Embarrassed by Abner Uribe's Behavior on the Mound, Calling It Unacceptable

Brewers Manager Criticizes Uribe’s On-Mound Antics

After the Milwaukee Brewers secured a 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Pat Murphy expressed disapproval of relief pitcher Abner Uribe’s behavior following a strikeout. He deemed Uribe’s actions “unacceptable.”

In the 8th inning, with two outs and players on first and second base, Uribe struck out Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson. Following the strikeout, he made a series of disrespectful gestures toward the Cardinals’ dugout, reminiscent of a famous wrestling celebration.

The Cardinals contested the strikeout, although it was upheld as Uribe’s pitch had indeed caught the bottom of the strike zone.

Reflecting on the incident, Murphy said, “I don’t know what got into him. He’s usually emotional, but that isn’t how we do things. It was embarrassing. Why act like that in a 6-0 game?”

Despite his frustration, Murphy acknowledged Uribe’s potential, stating, “I really like the kid. There’s a lot to appreciate about him, but this behavior is simply not acceptable for his teammates or the team overall.”

Uribe offered an apology through an interpreter, attributing some of the incident to the Cardinals’ behavior. He stated, “They know who I am, and I have a history of being emotional. We should be better than that.”

He also mentioned an interaction involving Cardinals coach Oliver Marmol during that day’s practice, which he believed warranted some of his conduct. “I think it was unprofessional for their coach to signal intentions toward our players,” he noted.

Post-game, Marmol refrained from commenting on Uribe’s conduct, focusing instead on his own team’s demeanor. “It seemed to me that they were addressing things on their side. That’s their player to handle,” he stated, unaware of the accusations Uribe had made regarding the Cardinals.
