Rep. Chip Roy is defeated in the Texas Republican primary runoff for Attorney General by Sen. Mayes Middleton.

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy has lost his bid for the Republican nomination for attorney general to state senator Mays Middleton. Following the election, Roy took to social media to congratulate Middleton and mentioned that a full statement would follow later.

Middleton secured the nomination after neither candidate garnered sufficient votes during the March Republican primary. Upon winning, he made a statement on X, expressing gratitude to Texas and emphasizing the importance of unity against the left in the upcoming elections.

He will now compete against state Senator Nathan Johnson, a Democrat, who also emerged victorious in his runoff election on the same day.

Though former President Donald Trump has made over 100 endorsements in the primary, he has previously criticized Roy but opted not to endorse either candidate in this race.

The winner in the general election will take over the attorney general position currently held by Ken Paxton, who recently won the Republican Senate nomination, defeating incumbent John Cornyn. This is particularly significant for Texas, as it marks the first new senator since Ted Cruz took office in 2013. Paxton is expected to face state Rep. James Talarico in the Senate election this November.

Roy decided to pursue the attorney general role instead of seeking re-election. His congressional seat, representing 21 districts in Texas, is now the focus of attention. In March, Republican Mark Teixeira, who has backing from Trump and Governor Abbott, won the Republican nomination and will compete against Democratic candidate Christine Hook and independent Dan McQueen in the fall election to succeed Roy.
