Anti-ICE Protests Turn Chaotic in Newark, New Jersey
Clashes erupted between anti-ICE protesters and federal agents outside a detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Democratic figures, including Senator Andy Kim, are advocating for the release of undocumented immigrants who have begun hunger strikes due to deplorable conditions. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has dismissed the protesters as engaging in political theatrics and countered the hunger strikers’ claims, stating that they were impeding federal workers, particularly in cases involving immigrants with serious criminal histories.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the demonstrations, labeling the protesters as “fake” and suggesting they were being paid to appear. He asserted that Delaney Hall operates as one of the best facilities of its kind globally. His comments came amid increasing concern from Democratic lawmakers regarding the conditions at the facility, where complaints about overcrowding and medical care have arisen. According to Senator Kim, some detainees initiated a hunger strike.
The situation intensified when Representatives Daniel Goldman and Jerrold Nadler were allowed inside the facility for a closer look at the claims being made. Protests that began on Friday escalated, leading to confrontations between demonstrators and ICE officers. Events at Delaney Hall became turbulent, particularly on Sunday night, as protesters attempted to obstruct vehicles accessing the facility.
On Monday, police were forced to use tear gas and remove demonstrators who were clashing outside. Footage from the scene depicted police confronting and detaining several protesters. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin defended Delaney Hall, rejecting allegations from both detainees and lawmakers about the conditions inside.
Mullin remarked, “This is not a Holiday Inn,” when questioned about the complaints regarding living conditions. He further criticized officials like Senator Kim, who had claimed direct involvement in witnessing the deteriorating situation during recent visits. When asked about Kim being pepper-sprayed during protests, Mullin expressed regret about his presence at the site.
Kim recounted a troubling interaction, where a detainee showed him spoiled food, indicating significant issues at the center. Despite the claims, ICE officials maintained that conditions at the facility are neither dangerous nor inhumane.
