Meta Launches Subscription Tiers for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta Introduces Paid Subscriptions Across Social Media Platforms

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced on Wednesday the launch of paid premium subscriptions for its platforms worldwide—these include Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus, along with new tiers for Meta AI.

As reported, Meta is looking to diversify its revenue by introducing these paid subscription options globally. The announcement revealed separate plans for enhanced features on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, along with more advanced Meta AI functionalities.

The subscriptions start at $4 per month for both Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus, while WhatsApp Plus is priced at $3 per month. Subscribers to these tiers will have access to more tools within the apps, improved analytics for their content, and greater control over ad targeting. Moreover, there’s also the Meta One plan, which includes access to more sophisticated Meta AI features.

The premium subscriptions will coexist with the existing Meta Verified program, which provides benefits like better support and identity theft protection for creators and businesses, ranging from $15 to $500 monthly.

For everyday users, these subscriptions are optional and not mandatory. The Plus and Meta One tiers primarily target those seeking more control and features, particularly influencers and businesses. Subscribers will enjoy perks such as the ability to highlight their stories for additional views, extend the visibility of stories by another 24 hours, use custom reactions like super hearts, create additional pinned chats on WhatsApp, and tap into other premium functionalities.

The Plus subscriptions also introduce features that allow users to track views for Stories and Reels, create unlimited viewer lists for specific posts, and search those viewer lists. Privacy is another aspect; paid subscribers can choose to post content more discreetly, so it doesn’t automatically show up in their followers’ feeds.

This subscription launch comes amid significant changes within Meta. Recently, reports highlighted that the company has shifted thousands of employees into AI-centric positions, alongside notable layoffs.

In an internal memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s head of human resources, it was shared that the redeployed employees would be organized into four new groups focused on developing AI tools and applications. These new teams are designed to streamline management and improve productivity, as noted by Gale. Further specifics about the staffing changes were set to be communicated to employees on the same day as the layoffs.

Gale mentioned that the reorganization is expected to enhance productivity and job satisfaction, though Meta has not provided comments beyond the internal memo.

This staffing reconfiguration precedes the planned cut of around 8,000 positions. By the end of 2025, Meta employed over 78,000 individuals across its platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Employees were informed of the layoffs in late April as part of a larger strategy to boost efficiency while heavily investing in AI development.
