A local celebrity has been identified as the suspect in the hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a young bride at a bus stop, as indicated by various reports.
Asmar Elayat, a 41-year-old health official in San Diego, is accused of hitting 27-year-old Katie Osorio with her Infiniti G35 last Saturday.
Osorio worked as a deputy director of subsistence services for the San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services, having been with the department since 2020.
Previously, she had collaborated with the County Welfare Directors Association and the Riverside County Department of Public and Social Services.
Elayat allegedly struck Osorio at the intersection of National Avenue and 35th Street. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries, as reported by ABC10 News.
“It’s incredibly tragic; Katie was just waiting at the bus stop,” noted a GoFundMe campaign created for her. “She bravely fought for her life but sadly didn’t make it. Our family is heartbroken and trying to honor her memory during this devastating time.”
Osorio’s cousin, Evelyn Osorio, revealed that Katie had been planning her wedding and was gearing up to start a nursing program.
Elayat has been charged with several offenses related to the hit-and-run, including vehicular manslaughter, and was released on bail. She is expected to be arraigned on June 1.
There is some uncertainty regarding Elayat’s current employment status with the county.
A county spokesperson, Sarah Sweeney, expressed condolences, noting, “We are deeply saddened to hear about this tragic loss of life, and our hearts are with the family and friends who are mourning right now.”
In a separate note, Elayat discussed the implications of a government shutdown last October, stating the lack of a resolved timeline was concerning, although unrelated to the current situation.
