Trump administration reduces race-focused admissions for Coast Guard officers

Coast Guard Ends Race-Based Admissions for College Students

The U.S. Coast Guard has decided to stop admitting college students seeking to become police officers based on race. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as reported by sources.

According to DHS General Counsel James Percival, the administration is dedicated to removing what they deem unconstitutional DEI policies. He stated that racial quotas embedded in the program for potential Coast Guard officers violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. By abolishing these quotas, the Coast Guard intends to refocus on military readiness and legal compliance.

The College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) previously prioritized students from institutions that fulfilled certain racial quotas.

Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate from the Justice Department’s Civil Division commented on this development, emphasizing the need for merit-based access to opportunities like the Coast Guard Pre-Service Initiative, rather than focusing on a university’s racial diversity.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to dismantle DEI policies across federal agencies and the military. In a related move, Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth recently emphasized at a West Point graduation that the military should prioritize merit and capability over socio-political considerations, criticizing attempts to shape military culture in a more progressive direction.
