Djokovic’s Tense Moment at French Open
Novak Djokovic began his third-round match against Brazil’s Joao Fonseca with enthusiasm, but the mood shifted when a cameraman encroached on his space. During play at Roland Garros on Friday, footage surfaced showing Djokovic responding sharply to the cameraman who had stepped too close just as the set ended.
After securing the second set 6-4 against the 19-year-old Fonseca, the cameraman aimed for a close-up shot, prompting an irritated reaction from Djokovic. He said, “Can you come in my face more? Please, give me some space,” expressing his frustration quite sarcastically.
At that moment, he threw his hands up and yelled, leading the cameraman to back off immediately. As noted by TNT Sports commentator Nick Mullins, an assistant referee had even tried to intervene, pleading with the cameraman to keep his distance. “That cameraman has now been replaced,” Mullins remarked. It was indeed a tense exchange amidst what was supposed to be a straightforward match for Djokovic, who just needed to win one more set to move into the next round.
However, the match took an unexpected turn. Fonseca, ranked 28th in the world, rallied impressively to defeat Djokovic in a surprising upset, with scores of 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. This marked the first encounter between the two players, and Fonseca clearly demonstrated why he’s considered one of tennis’s rising stars.
Following this match, Fonseca is set to face Norwegian Casper Ruud, who ranks 15th, in the fourth round, as he aims for a place in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
