Passenger on Atlanta train was attacked and stabbed 20 times by a homeless man in a random incident.

A tragic incident unfolded on an Atlanta train over the weekend when a passenger was fatally stabbed in broad daylight. Officials report that John Elijah Matthews, 25, attacked 66-year-old Margaret Swan, stabbing her nearly 20 times in what is being described as a random and brutal assault.

Surveillance footage captured the moment Matthews boarded a MARTA train at Oakland City Station, sat beside Swan, and then suddenly pulled out a knife to slit her throat, as noted by local news sources.

In what seemed like a completely unprovoked attack, he stabbed her 18 to 20 times before fleeing. Matthews, who is said to be homeless, was apprehended shortly after on the platform when frightened passengers provided details about his appearance. Unfortunately, Swan was found lifeless on the train, surrounded by a significant amount of blood, based on information from a criminal warrant issued by MARTA authorities.

First responders did their best to save Swan, but she succumbed to her injuries. Police also recovered the knife believed to have been used in the assault.

MARTA officials expressed their condolences, labeling the act a senseless display of violence that raises serious concerns for the community.

Many riders have pointed fingers at recent fare changes that permit anyone, including the homeless, to access MARTA stations freely, suggesting this may have led to increased safety issues.

This tragedy comes just days after another stabbing incident involving a MARTA rider at Georgia State Station, highlighting a growing concern among passengers. One commuter voiced their worries, saying, “This is crazy. We really need more security around here.”

Another expressed the need to restrict access in certain areas, pointing out that safety is becoming an increasingly critical issue. Matthews, currently being held in Fulton County Jail, faces a felony murder charge and is set to appear in court on Monday.
