California Veteran Murdered by Tenant

A beloved Army veteran from California was brutally murdered and discarded in a park by a tenant, as detailed in recently released court documents.

Police report that 56-year-old Brenda Gillette from San Diego was killed and dismembered by Robert Watkins, a disturbed tenant from Chula Vista. Watkins eventually admitted to this horrific act that took place on May 31.

Events took a tragic turn around 2 a.m. on the day of the murder. Gillette made a call to the police from her rental home, expressing concerns about ongoing issues with Watkins, her tenant.

Gillette informed the police that Watkins had concealed the security cameras in her home and that he was violating house rules by having too many visitors. However, the police indicated they could not assist her in evicting him.

At approximately 3 a.m., Gillette was last seen on a Ring camera walking toward the back of the house, where she also fulfilled the role of property manager. This was the final sighting of her alive.

The following afternoon, her sister reported her missing to the authorities.

When police arrived at Gillette’s rental home on Curbada Street for a welfare check, they found her vehicle but no sign of Gillette herself.

Concerned, the officers searched the premises and discovered bloody evidence both inside and outside. During interviews, they noticed scratch marks on Watkins and blood on his shoes.

Watkins was arrested, and he confessed to the crime during questioning, according to prosecutors.

Documents reveal that Watkins, who suffers from dementia, brutally beat Gillette with a hammer and then dismembered her body.

Prosecutors stated that Watkins callously refused to disclose the location of Gillette’s remains unless a plea deal was on the table.

Gillette’s body parts were later found stuffed in a suitcase that Watkins had left in Paseo del Rey Park, not far from his rental. Additional remains were discovered in the Pacific Ocean adjacent to the USS Midway Museum in San Diego Harbor.

A security camera positioned near a retired aircraft carrier captured footage of Watkins discarding the suitcase off the pier.

Currently, Watkins is being held at the San Diego County Jail under suspicion of murder, with his arraignment set for Monday afternoon.
