Disturbing turn in case of undocumented immigrant charged with family murders

Family Tragedy Repercussions

Authorities have arrested an illegal immigrant, Joaquin Escoto, in connection with the brutal killings of three family members—two women and a two-week-old infant—in Modesto last week. There are indications that Escoto may have lived with the victims and possibly fathered a child with one of them.

Detectives revealed that Escoto, 28, had a relationship with one of the victims, although details surrounding that connection are still being examined. The victims have been identified as 54-year-old María Silvia Núñez Villalobos, her 23-year-old daughter Fabiola González Núñez, and González Núñez’s infant son, Mateo.

Escoto’s immigration status has drawn attention, especially after it came to light that he had been deported three times, with California’s sanctuary laws reportedly complicating matters for federal authorities seeking to remove him.

Currently, Escoto is facing three murder charges, along with additional allegations, including the use of a deadly weapon and an existing warrant from a previous DUI. The tragic incident unfolded on May 28 when police arrived at a home near an elementary school following reports of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, they discovered González Núñez with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. In a search of the residence, police found Núñez Villalobos and Mateo; the grandmother was also declared dead, while the infant succumbed to his injuries later at a hospital.

In a surprising turn, police discovered another young child alive at the scene, identified as the son of Escoto and González Núñez. He has since been placed in the care of Child Protective Services.

After the murders, law enforcement set up a perimeter around the neighborhood and conducted a manhunt, leading to nearby schools going into lockdown. Escoto was eventually found hiding nearby and was arrested without resistance.

Family members expressed their grief, stating, “Our family is experiencing a heartbreaking loss that cannot be described in words.” They have initiated a fundraising effort to cover funeral expenses and support services. They described the tragedy as tearing their family apart.

The family remembers González Núñez as a “devoted mother and beloved person who brought joy and love,” while Núñez Villalobos is honored as a “loving grandmother.” The case has sparked deeper scrutiny as details about Escoto’s immigration history emerge.

“In the blink of an eye, generations of love, memories and dreams for the future were taken from us,” the family’s fundraising page notes. By the end of the week, it had raised more than $26,000 toward their $30,000 goal as they navigate through this tragic loss. The investigation is ongoing.
