12 Injured, 2 Critically, in Shooting at Ohio Festival
In Toledo, Ohio, a street festival turned chaotic when gunfire broke out, leaving 12 individuals hurt, with two in critical condition. Eyewitnesses initially mistook the sounds for fireworks and described a scene filled with panic as people ran for safety. Local authorities are actively investigating and are appealing to the public for any photos or videos that could help locate the suspects, who are still at large.
As of Monday, police reported that all injured victims, aged between 14 and 61, are in stable condition. The shooting occurred during the Old West End Festival, and it’s believed there were at least two shooters, possibly firing at one another. As investigations unfold, the police have yet to ascertain a motive or provide details on the suspects.
“The investigation is ongoing, and we are pursuing various leads following the shooting,” the Toledo Police indicated in a statement. While no arrests have been made, they expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation so far.
Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan, addressing the media, mentioned the likelihood of multiple shooters involved. He lamented the incident’s impact on a cherished community tradition, emphasizing the unfortunate disruption of an event meant for enjoyment.
Police dispatchers received reports of the shooting near Delaware Avenue and Glenwood Avenue around 5:37 PM on Saturday. Officers arrived to find various victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Detective Lt. Dan Gerken called the violence unprecedented for this event, stating, “In terms of violence, this is over the top.” Meanwhile, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his concern and confidence that the perpetrators of this “senseless” act will be identified. He stressed that summer festivals should be safe for families, and he and his wife offered prayers for those affected.
Toledo’s Mayor Wade Kapuszkiewicz expressed optimism for the city’s recovery and emphasized the community’s resilience in the face of adversity. He urged citizens not to view such violence as an acceptable part of life, stating that the actions taken by local law enforcement helped save lives during the situation.
