Congressman Claims to Have Stopped ICE Arrest
Democratic Representative Dan Goldman from New York reported that his office intervened to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from detaining a man outside a courtroom.
In a statement shared on social media, Goldman mentioned that he “rescued” his “father” after confronting ICE agents, whom he accused of acting unlawfully.
Goldman remarked, “Active Congressional oversight and legal advocacy is our best defense against this administration’s lawless dragnet.” He reflected on the situation, saying, “I thought they could ignore the law right in front of everyone. They were mistaken.” He emphasized that he reminded the agents they could not arrest individuals appearing in immigration court; however, they proceeded to arrest the man in front of his family.
Goldman is well-known for establishing a “triage” center at his Manhattan office aimed at offering legal help to immigrants caught in ICE operations. He noted that his efforts resulted in the release of 42 federal detainees, the most recent being from the Delaney Hall ICE facility in New Jersey.
He described how, upon the family’s arrival at his office’s center, his team quickly mobilized. “Within minutes, one of my staff members was dealing with ICE while the children enjoyed snacks and played games, and @NYLAG was preparing an emergency case,” he said.
Goldman claimed that ICE “quickly released” the detained man back to his family, suggesting that the agents were aware they were acting outside the law. “Active Congressional oversight and legal advocacy is our best defense against this administration’s lawless dragnet,” he reiterated.
ICE has not provided a comment in response to inquiries.
Goldman is facing a primary challenge for re-election from a far-left candidate supported by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander argues he is more equipped to challenge former President Donald Trump and has labeled Goldman a “corporate Democrat.”
The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 23rd.
