Officials in Pomona have halted the distribution of some summer recreation guides that were recently mailed out after it was found they included inappropriate images that should not have been published.
On Monday, the city released a statement acknowledging that certain residents received a version of the guide featuring explicit content. They emphasized that such material was never meant to be part of the public document.
“The City of Pomona is aware that some copies of the Recreation Guide recently mailed may contain inappropriate images that should not appear in publications distributed to residents,” the city noted.
Officials clarified that the images were not authorized for inclusion and ended up there by mistake.
“We want to assure the public that this was not intentional and these materials are not approved for publication in recreation guides,” the statement continued.
The deputy city manager explained that the images originated from an adult content advertisement that mistakenly found its way into the guide. It was reported that only a limited number of the tainted guides were sent out.
In response, city leaders immediately stopped the further distribution of the guides while an investigation took place. This review is being conducted alongside the city’s publishing and printing partners to figure out how the explicit content ended up in the final product.
This content has understandably raised concerns among residents, particularly since the guide is typically viewed by families and children.
“We sincerely apologize to the community, especially the families and children who may have been affected,” the officials stated. “This content does not reflect the city’s values, and we take this matter very seriously.”
City leaders are now focused on identifying the cause behind the error and improving oversight to prevent something similar from occurring in the future. They mentioned that new safety protocols will be explored as part of the ongoing review.
The city also acknowledged the potential harm this incident might cause to its relationship with the residents.
“We recognize that this incident has damaged public trust, and we value transparency as we consider the matter and take corrective action,” the statement said.
For those seeking information about the city’s recreation programs, officials have made a revised version of the guide available online. A version free of the explicit content can be accessed through the city’s website while the investigation is ongoing.
