Impressive new renderings show what to expect at NYC's Penn Station.

Recent renderings depict significant changes to Penn Station following an $8 billion renovation, which advocates believe will establish the station as “America’s global transportation hub.”

Images highlight the large, dimly-lit pillars currently on the aging platforms, which will be removed to make way for a brighter, more spacious design with higher ceilings.

Another set of illustrations contrasts the current, worn ticketing area with plans for a polished, unified main concourse featuring a 50-foot-high ceiling crowned by a striking gold-plated clock.

Commuters will navigate an elegant staircase, gripping bronze handrails as they move through the newly designed station.

“This is going to be America’s global hub,” said Andy Byford, who gained the nickname “Train Daddy” during his tenure as head of New York’s subways. He currently serves as a special project advisor for Amtrak and spoke during a presentation with designers.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added, “Thanks to President Trump, we are ushering in a golden age of transportation.” He emphasized the vision to revamp the rundown station into a modern hub that will benefit millions for generations.

Duffy continued by asserting, “These renderings show the Trump administration’s commitment to transformative results for Americans.” He expressed optimism about continuing collaboration on this landmark project that could reshape New York City.

Byford remarked on the “rock-solid” support from the Trump administration, noting expectations for substantial federal funding. However, he highlighted the necessity for contributions from New York, New Jersey, and city governments as well.

Construction is anticipated to wrap up by late 2027. Byford mentioned that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and its passengers would greatly benefit and should be involved as contributors, yet he stressed there would be “no fare on the ticket” to fund the project.

To clarify any misunderstandings, Byford noted that multiple local transit agencies, including New Jersey Transit, are regularly consulted in the process, which is being led by federal authorities.

Byford has engaged in ongoing discussions with state officials, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, and has been meeting with community leaders to address concerns about the project’s transparency.

While many New Yorkers are frustrated with years of discussions without action, Byford insisted on the urgency of moving forward.

Planners attempted to downplay the inclusion of a presidential seal and the name “President Donald J. Trump” carved into the station’s walls. This is expected to be located near an escalator leading to the new concourse.

Trump, a real estate mogul hailing from New York, has a personal stake in the renovations.

Officials brushed off inquiries regarding the presidential seal, stating it’s not uncommon for federal buildings.

The successful proposal was submitted by Penn Transformation Partners, which includes Vornado Realty Trust, construction firms Halmar and Skanska, and various architects.

Vornado, a key player in the project, is led by Steve Ross, a longtime Trump supporter, while Halmar’s Peter Cipriano previously advised the Transportation Department during Trump’s presidency.

Vishaan Chakrabarti, a prominent architect who has suggested various designs for Penn Station over the years, emphasized that history will ultimately evaluate the success of the project.

Madison Square Garden will continue to be part of the overall plan, although the theater within it will need to be relocated for the renovations to occur. A new, spacious entrance hall is planned to take its place, subject to land acquisition negotiations with MSG’s owner, James Dolan.
