Donovan Reflects on Evolution of American Soccer

Once upon a time, American soccer players had a tough time earning respect abroad. But Landon Donovan, a legend in the sport, has witnessed a significant shift in that perception over the years.

On Tuesday, Donovan found himself in an unusual position—working behind the counter at Raising Cane’s new flagship restaurant in Inglewood, California. It was a moment of unexpected reflection about the journey of American soccer.

This new location is impressive, designed with inspiration from the nearby Intuit Dome.

Donovan’s World Cup Reflections

Donovan was there for a ceremonial “shift,” leaning out of the restaurant’s pick-up window, taking orders from customers. This moment brought back memories related to football, especially as the U.S. prepares for its match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium, which will kick off the 2026 World Cup.

Amid the hustle and bustle, Donovan took a moment to reflect. The perception of American soccer has really transformed since his teenage years in Germany. “When I moved to Germany at 17, there was really no understanding of American soccer there. But I think we’ve worked hard to earn respect,” he said.

For a long time, American players faced skepticism from the international community. Yet, things have changed. Many American players are now signed with major European clubs, participating in the Champions League—opportunities that were barely imaginable in Donovan’s playing days.

U.S. Men’s National Team’s Growing Respect

The landscape of American soccer has shifted drastically. As the U.S. prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the sport is more popular than ever. With this surge in interest, the U.S. men’s national team faces increasing pressure to perform.

Donovan, who knows the weight of expectations all too well, shared his thoughts on what the current players might be feeling as the event nears. “They’ll probably feel nervous yet excited at the same time. I know that feeling. Soccer is booming in popularity. I’m also just excited to be a fan,” he adds.

During his visit, Donovan expressed amazement at the changes in the area: “It was wild to see Raising Cane’s, Hollywood Park, and SoFi all together. It’s a lot to take in.”

For him, the rapid development around him serves as a metaphor for the rise of American soccer. The days of demanding respect seem to be behind us.

“It’s fantastic to see everything happening in L.A. As a proud Angeleno, I really love this city,” Donovan concluded.

As the world prepares for the arrival of the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer, the groundwork laid by players like Donovan has been crucial in shifting the United States from an outsider to a prominent host nation in the soccer world. The respect that American soccer has long sought is finally being realized.
