Violence Erupts during World Cup Opening in Mexico City

On Thursday, chaos unfolded outside the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City as anti-government protesters clashed with riot police during the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup. This disruption occurred while fans, including FIFA officials, enjoyed a performance by pop star Shakira inside the stadium.

As police attempted to manage the escalating protest, demonstrators began throwing objects, leading to a response where riot police deployed batons and shields to maintain order. The scene quickly turned chaotic.

In the midst of the turmoil, a man reportedly suffered a heart attack, and emergency responders faced challenges in reaching individuals in need due to the confusion around them.

Such violence on the tournament’s first day raised significant concerns regarding security measures for the month-long event, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Protesters voiced their grievances related to various issues in Mexico, particularly highlighting apprehensions regarding cartel violence and widespread poverty.

Rallying for government accountability, demonstrators brought attention to the plight of approximately 130,000 individuals reported missing in the country. Many locals feel that the vast sums of money allocated for hosting the World Cup could be better spent addressing domestic challenges.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to fill the stands during the tournament, making the disturbances outside significant as they could affect the perception of safety going forward. As of Thursday evening, neither FIFA nor the local organizing committee had commented on the incidents, including the extent of injuries or the possibility of arrests.

It seems likely that the clashes on opening day will keep spotlighting safety concerns throughout the remainder of the tournament.
