Judge Issues Ultimatum on Trump’s Anti-Weaponization Fund

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema has indicated that the lawsuit against President Trump will proceed unless the administration formally denies the establishment of the controversial “anti-weaponization” fund.

This lawsuit was initiated by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which argues that the $1 billion fund is essentially a way for Trump to repay his associates.

“This is about accountability for all Americans who have been victims of illegal activity and weaponization,” the organization asserts.

Trump has proposed a $1.8 billion fund aimed at compensating individuals he claims were unjustly prosecuted, including those involved in the January 6 event.

The fund itself originated from a settlement that arose after Trump withdrew a lawsuit against the IRS concerning leaked tax documents.

In defense of the fund’s current status, administration lawyers cited declarations from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who stated before Congress that the bill was unlikely to pass. However, he didn’t provide a written statement to corroborate this.

Blanche remarked, “We’re not moving forward with the fund, of course.”

Judge Brinkema was skeptical of this argument. She referenced the president’s position and requested specific written statements from both Blanche and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent opposing the fund’s creation. Brinkema has given the administration a week to provide a declaration under penalty of perjury stating that the fund will not be established.

Additionally, Senate Democrats attempted to include provisions for an anti-weaponization fund in an ICE funding bill, but Republicans dismissed that effort.

The Justice Department’s description of the fund states: “This calls for accountability for all Americans who have been victims of legal action and use of force: the millions whose online speech has been silenced, the senators who received secret subpoenas, and the churchgoers targeted by the FBI.”

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington condemned the fund, alleging it further exemplifies a corrupt administration.

In their statement, the organization criticized Trump and the Justice Department for rushing to settle a $10 billion lawsuit against his own administration, which they argue may have violated constitutional provisions.

Brinkema, 81, was appointed by former President Bill Clinton.
