Talarico Critiques Biden’s Border Policies Amid Senate Bid

Democratic candidates in Texas are expressing strong disapproval of former President Biden’s open border approach, particularly as concerns mount about whether he’s too radical to succeed in the upcoming election.

James Talarico, a key Democratic contender for the Texas Senate, recently took on Biden during a podcast appearance on “Cogdell Law Uncensored.” He sharpened his rhetoric regarding border security, suggesting a shift in his stance.

Talarico’s record includes far-left positions, advocating for the “dismantling” of Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE), which he refers to as the “secret police.” He has previously framed the border as a “welcome mat” for illegal immigrants. This November, he will square off against Republican Ken Paxton, who has the backing of Trump.

Talarico’s Critique on Border Security

“I’ve faced criticism from my own party for calling out Biden on border security,” Talarico remarked. He recounted discussions with Congress members from border regions who detailed the chaos resulting from Biden’s policies.

Talarico’s moderate immigration position has emerged since his campaign began in Texas, a state with the highest number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. His campaign, however, has not provided evidence to substantiate some claims made during the race.

While serving in the Texas House, he noted an upswing in illegal immigration during the previous administration.

“Democrats need to focus on improving government operations, especially in immigration, where things fall apart. That’s my reason for being a Border Security Democrat,” Talarico explained on the podcast.

He emphasized the need for responsible and transparent processes to vet individuals entering the country.

Balancing Security and Rights

During his podcast, Talarico also called for accountability in public safety, stating, “We have to keep harmful individuals out.” He seemed to hold a nuanced position, suggesting that maintaining public safety is the government’s foremost duty.

The Trump administration had prioritized focusing ICE efforts on serious offenders, particularly those with a history of violence.

Talarico’s spokesperson clarified that he supports bolstering border security rather than abolishing ICE, emphasizing a legislative push for modernizing ports of entry and increasing Border Patrol agents.

“Both parties have missed the mark on immigration,” said Talarico, “which is why I’m running for Senate—to focus on deporting criminals, not targeting families and businesses that contribute to our economy.”

A Complex Stance on Gun Control

In discussing gun rights, Talarico presented himself as a supporter of the Second Amendment, while also endorsing stringent gun control measures.

“I’m a proponent of the Second Amendment, but we must ensure regulations to keep firearms away from dangerous individuals,” he stated. He acknowledged the need for safe custody laws and thorough background checks.

Interestingly, just months ago, Talarico endorsed the “Red Flag Law,” which allows judges to remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. He had previously criticized Republican attitudes toward gun issues, suggesting a disconnect in his positions.

Controversial Views on Transgender Issues

On another front, Talarico has faced scrutiny regarding his views on gender-affirming care for minors. While he stated a personal opposition to gender reassignment surgery for minors, he has also declared strong support for transgender youth in other contexts.

“People in power distract from corruption using chaos,” he noted, suggesting a broader narrative at play in political discourse.

What remains uncertain is how Talarico will navigate these complex issues as he continues his campaign, especially considering Paxton’s responses have yet to clarify his position on Talarico’s evolving message.
