U.S. Men’s National Team Shines in World Cup Opener

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The atmosphere at Los Angeles Stadium was electric on Friday night. With 70,492 fans clad in red, white, and blue, chants of “USA!” erupted after almost every American advance throughout the match.

At the forefront of the excitement was Folarin Balogun, a striker who seems to embody the hopes of the nation.

Balogun delivered a stellar performance in the first half against Paraguay, setting the stage for the United States’ thrilling entry into the tournament.

The USA kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 4-1 win, largely thanks to Balogun’s two goals. He was involved in nearly every key moment of the game.

The opening goal had Balogun’s mark on it. When Weston McKennie sent a ball into the box aimed for him, Paraguayan defender Damien Bobadilla inadvertently redirected it into his own net.

In the 28th minute, Balogun seemed on the verge of scoring his first World Cup goal. He broke free of the defense and executed a precise finish, but an offside call dashed the celebrations. Still, he raised his hands to pump up the crowd.

Just three minutes later, Christian Pulisic threaded a beautifully placed ball into open space. This time, Paraguay couldn’t catch a break. Balogun took the opportunity, converting a clear chance to send the stadium into a frenzy.

Before the halftime whistle, he struck again. Balogun sliced through the defenders and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot into the top-left corner, pushing the score to 3-0. The American fans erupted in celebration, continuing their chant of “USA!” as the game progressed.

His two goals made him the first American to net multiple times in a World Cup match since Bert Patenaude did the same in 1930 – an interesting connection, given that Patenaude also scored against Paraguay.

Perhaps there’s a sense of fate in Balogun’s story. His mother, Florence, was pregnant when she visited New York in 2001. Airline regulations kept her from returning to London without a medical note, forcing her to deliver Folarin in Brooklyn on July 3, only to return to England two months later.

What seemed like a complication then now resonates with a sense of destiny. Balogun naturally had U.S. citizenship because of his birth in the country. Over the years, both England and Nigeria showed interest in his international play as he advanced through European football, yet his mother always believed he was meant to represent the U.S. Balogun ultimately saw it the same way, opting to play for the nation of his birth and stepping into the role that U.S. Soccer has long sought.

On that Friday night, destiny seemed to take center stage in Los Angeles.

Balogun exited the field in the 72nd minute to a standing ovation, earning Man of the Match for his efforts. The United States has long dreamed of finding a forward capable of excelling on the World Cup stage.

With this victory over Paraguay, that dream felt suddenly within reach.
