Iranian hackers report hacking into California water systems following US attacks on Iran

Claims of Hacking California Water Systems by Iranian Group

An Iranian hacking collective, known as Handala, recently asserted that they infiltrated the water systems of various California cities. This seems to be a retaliatory move against the United States, although cybersecurity specialists are skeptical about the actual threat posed by the hackers.

The group made their announcement on Thursday, claiming to have accessed systems linked to cities such as Bakersfield, Visalia, and Chico. They even shared screenshots that appeared to show the water bills of residents. According to Handala, this cyber attack was a response to recent US military operations that targeted two reservoirs in Iran.

Handala described the situation, saying, “Just two days ago, [Trump] destroyed the water source. They unleashed millions of dollars worth of rockets on the suffering people of Sirik, forcing them to endure thirst in extreme heat.” They further claimed, “Today, retaliation reaches the heart of America.”

State media in Iran reported that US airstrikes had damaged water storage facilities, resulting in over 20,000 people losing access to water.

Even with such alarming declarations, Handala stated they don’t intend to disrupt California’s water supply but rather see this as a warning to President Trump. They also claimed to have acquired 5 gigabytes of data during the alleged breach.

However, the California Water Authority found no signs of any breach in their systems. A spokesperson from CalWater affirmed that preliminary checks of their IT and operational networks showed no signs of compromise. They indicated that the investigation is ongoing.

Security experts expressed doubt regarding Handala’s capabilities, saying there’s no evidence that they could actually disrupt US water supplies. Sean Malone, Chief Information Security Officer at BeyondTrust, mentioned that Handala has a tendency to exaggerate its abilities, suggesting that their claims about withholding water supplies are more of a psychological tactic than a practical threat.

Nonetheless, experts acknowledge that water utilities are enticing targets for foreign threats and cybercriminals.

This incident marks a notable escalation in the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. Amidst all this, President Trump has stated that both nations were “on track” to finalize a peace agreement aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Trump added, “We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, for a long time to come. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If not, we have the ultimate alternative, which hopefully will never be used again! Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”
