Gio Reyna Celebrates World Cup Goal with Personal News

IRVINE, Calif. — Gio Reyna made his mark in the U.S. men’s national team’s impressive 4-1 win against Paraguay in the World Cup opener, scoring with a powerful shot that showcased why coach Mauricio Pochettino has faith in him.

Later, in the Mixed Zone, he dropped an unexpected revelation. “If that’s what you’re asking about, my wife is pregnant,” Reyna shared.

Wait, what? That came as a surprise.

“I’ve known for months and was just waiting for the right moment,” Reyna, 23, explained. “I even shared a picture with her. It was a special moment for both of us.”

After scoring, Reyna playfully covered his ears before mentioning it was a private joke among close friends. He then cradled the ball against his stomach, signaling to the world about his wife’s pregnancy.

This moment serves as a significant turning point for Reyna, who faced challenges during the last World Cup, including controversies that shook U.S. soccer.

When discussing personal changes, Reyna often brings up, well, getting a dog. But, he admits that kids hold a bit more importance. With all due respect to Melo, that’s probably true.

Responding to questions about his past experiences leading up to this World Cup, Reyna played it cool. “I didn’t think about that at all,” he remarked. But why is this opportunity so special?

The build-up to his goal, featuring a brilliant 26-pass sequence, truly showcased teamwork and highlighted it as one of the most impressive goals of the tournament.

In recent months, Pochettino has been quizzed on Reyna’s position in the squad despite limited playtime at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The coach has consistently pointed out Reyna’s inherent qualities are essential.

It’s hard to believe Pochettino wouldn’t turn to Reyna when the U.S. is in search of a late-game goal.

“I just told him he deserves it,” said Pulisic. “We see his talent every day. So, it’s not a huge surprise, and he truly earned it. It’s fantastic to see him shine in this moment.”

Encouraged by his wife and parents, Reyna feels motivated to take more shots on goal. Perhaps they’re onto something.

“I think I should,” Reyna noted. “If I get those chances in the upcoming matches, I’ll make sure to seize them and aim for the same outcome.”
