G7 Summit: Trump and Macron Discuss Iran Deal
At the G7 summit in the Alps on Monday, President Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron highlighted the Iran deal as a significant step toward global peace.
The three-day G7 meeting began in Evian, France, where President Trump was welcomed by Macron. In front of cameras, they made statements regarding the recent Iran war deal, and Trump noted a drop in oil prices as a positive outcome of the news.
Macron expressed his support for the Iran peace agreement, stating it would “resolve” the longstanding nuclear tensions between Iran and Western nations. He remarked:
A crucial agreement was signed yesterday, the peace deal with Iran. This is important because it first addresses the nuclear issue, which is vital for global peace. It will significantly aid in bringing peace to Lebanon and is a crucial step towards stabilizing both peace and the world economy.
Macron also discussed France’s commitment to security efforts, mentioning that coalition forces, including the UK and Japan, plan to patrol the Strait of Hormuz. These countries have committed to protecting their vessels during the ongoing conflict but are prepared to act once a ceasefire is established, which seems imminent.
“We are ready to contribute and support this agreement along with the international community,” he added, planning to discuss further cooperation with other allies. Earlier, Macron indicated that France’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and its accompanying naval force would be ready for deployment soon.
Trump responded to Macron’s comments by referring to him as “a special friend” and noted their strong relationship. They indicated that the focus would now transition from Iran towards addressing the situation in Ukraine, with Macron confirming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy would join discussions on Tuesday.
