Washington, D.C. Police Officers Accused of Manipulating Crime Stats

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro commented on an ongoing investigation involving 13 police officers from Washington, D.C., who have been accused of altering crime statistics. The intent, it seems, was to present a safer image of the city. Pirro emphasized that accurate crime reporting is vital for effective resource distribution and to safeguard victims, noting instances where serious offenses, like assaults with dangerous weapons, were downgraded to misdemeanors.

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors revealed that 14 individuals had been indicted in connection with a cocaine trafficking operation. The dealers reportedly sold drugs near elementary schools in Washington, D.C., sometimes during daylight hours and in full view of children. The indictment describes a conspiracy to distribute over 280 grams of cocaine base and at least 500 grams of cocaine within 1,000 feet of Hendry Elementary School, located in a particularly crime-affected area.

Prosecutors expressed concern over the risks posed to children, as these illegal activities occur while kids are commuting to and from school. Pirro articulated her distress, stating, “This is a poison being sold during the day within feet of schoolyards where children learn, play, and grow. Selling cocaine near children is not only illegal; it is an attack on the most vulnerable in our society. It puts children at risk.”

During the investigation, authorities executed multiple search warrants, leading to the arrests of various suspects, including some with prior criminal histories. They also confiscated numerous firearms along with significant quantities of drugs: 2.4 kilograms of crack cocaine, 1 kilogram of powder cocaine, 29 grams of fentanyl, and 12 pounds of marijuana.

Christopher Gumenis, a special agent from the Drug Enforcement Administration, remarked on the accessibility of drugs and weapons among these individuals, identifying them as violent offenders who are often repeat criminals. The recent arrests were part of a broader investigation aimed at dismantling a street gang involved in gun and drug trafficking, which had reportedly been a prominent source of violence within the city.

As part of this initiative, Pirro indicated plans to push the City Council to consider new legislation focused on child endangerment, which she noted is currently lacking in the city’s laws. Throughout the operation, authorities reportedly observed approximately 165 drug transactions, and she expressed hope that these recent developments would lead to a positive change in the community facing persistent challenges related to crime and drugs.
