Trump Critiques Mexico’s Leadership at G7 Summit
During a speech at the G7 summit, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed that Mexico is effectively governed by drug cartels, asserting that President Claudia Sheinbaum seems too fearful to take action. He indicated a willingness for the U.S. government to intervene where Mexico is unable to step up.
In his address, Trump pointed out that drug trafficking via waterways has decreased more than 90%, emphasizing that the focus now shifts to land routes for drug entry into the U.S.
“They come through Mexico,” he stated. “Mexico has lost control of itself. It’s unfortunate that the cartels are in charge there.”
Trump characterized Sheinbaum as a competent yet intimidating figure, reiterating that the drug cartels have complete control over Mexico.
These remarks come during rising tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, as Sheinbaum attempts to shield various key Mexican politicians indicted in the U.S. and those under investigation for possible connections to drug trafficking organizations.
Earlier reports indicated that the U.S. Department of Justice has charged Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine aides with drug trafficking conspiracy for allegedly collaborating with the Sinaloa Cartel. Since Rocha Moya is part of Sheinbaum’s Morena party, the president has publicly defended her, claiming there’s no substantial evidence against her and suggesting that the accusations stem from politically motivated actions by the U.S. far right aimed at destabilizing the progressive Morena party.
The MORENA party was founded by Andres Manuel López Obrador, who is both Sheinbaum’s mentor and Rocha Moya’s close associate. Sheinbaum has also sought to protect other high-ranking Mexican officials under U.S. scrutiny, including the governors of Tamaulipas and Sonora and the former governor of Tabasco.
