Inspired by Andy Weir’s book, the film showcases Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up in a spaceship with no recollection of his identity, his origin, or the reason he’s in deep space. Through various flashbacks, it unfolds that he has taken on a seemingly impossible task: saving the Sun from destruction at the hands of enigmatic microorganisms.
With an unexpected alien companion named Rocky, Grace discovers that Rocky’s home planet faces a similar fate, which means he might not be on this mission alone after all.
