Courtroom Cameras Excluded from Murder Trial
In Frisco, Texas, Jeff Metcalf, the father of murder victim Austin Metcalf, expressed his strong support for the decision to keep cameras out of the courtroom during the trial of Carmelo Anthony. Judge John Roach emphasized that this choice was crucial to ensure the fairness of the case.
In an interview, Jeff Metcalf mentioned, “There are minors who have to testify. It’s hard enough for them because they’ve witnessed trauma. They’ll carry those memories forever. It’s tough to see them take the stand and face difficult questions.”
Austin Metcalf was tragically stabbed in the chest by Anthony during a high school track meet in April 2025. Anthony was later convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Though Metcalf faced a gag order during the trial, he wanted to reach out to Anthony’s family. He acknowledged he hasn’t been contacted by them since his son’s death.
Reflecting on the situation, he shared, “If they had shown some responsibility and remorse, I believe things might have been different.” He also addressed the threats his family has received, stating they are currently under investigation by local police.
Metcalf conveyed a strong message to those issuing threats: “You have no soul, no compassion. Are you even human?”
Despite ongoing tensions, Metcalf urged for an end to the hostility, saying, “These two boys, especially mine, will never come back.” He expressed a nuanced perspective toward Anthony’s family, stating, “Just because he was convicted doesn’t mean we should blame this other family.” Meanwhile, Anthony has filed an appeal against his conviction.
Metcalf’s home has become a reflective space filled with photos and memorabilia honoring his son, where a somber atmosphere prevails. His home features many images of Austin alongside his twin brother, Hunter, who recently graduated and received Austin’s posthumous diploma. The twins had shared a close bond, often choosing to share a room, describing themselves as “attached at the waist.”
Looking ahead, Hunter will begin college soon while carrying the memories of what would have been a shared celebration for their upcoming 19th birthday.
Metcalf shared his admiration for Hunter, stating, “He’s shown an incredible strength that I never knew was possible.” Reflecting on his sons, he remarked, “I couldn’t ask for a better son.”
