Defense Authorization Bill Takes Shape
Army Secretary Pete Hegseth is making it a key goal to remove what some call “woke” policies from the Pentagon, and Senate Republicans are rallying behind him regarding the annual defense authorization bill.
As discussions around the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) unfold—an essential piece of legislation that allocates significant taxpayer money for the Department of Defense—Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) has quietly made strides in aligning with Hegseth’s goals.
Banks has managed to secure amendments within a policy package valued at $1.15 trillion, aimed at reversing the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies initiated during the Biden administration that have influenced Pentagon hiring, communication, and training practices.
“I believe President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are redefining the Department of Defense by removing the DEI practices from the previous administration that have negatively impacted morale and redirected focus from our core mission,” Banks expressed in a statement.
He added, “Our military’s objective should center around winning wars, not advancing political agendas. I’m proud to support this amendment that strengthens these reforms.”
This proposed amendment—which Banks shared with Fox News Digital—includes several provisions specifically targeting DEI practices in the Defense Department.
It would eliminate the emphasis on diversity among active duty warrant officers, officers, and reserve officers up for promotion, redirecting the focus towards qualifications, merit, and leadership skills during evaluations.
Hegseth has urged the Pentagon to prioritize military effectiveness and qualifications over diversity considerations.
“Real toxic leadership jeopardizes subordinates by maintaining low standards. It promotes individuals based on unchangeable traits rather than capability,” Hegseth stated last year.
Moreover, Banks’ amendment aims to eliminate restrictions within the Department of Defense on the use of gender identifiers or personal pronouns in official communications. This aligns with a previous executive order issued by President Trump asserting that expressing a gender identity differing from one’s biological sex does not satisfy the stringent criteria for military service.
The proposed changes in the NDAA would steer away from DEI training and instead emphasize teaching core military values like honor, courage, dedication, integrity, and excellence.
