US-Iran Peace Talks Stalled
Efforts by the US to initiate crucial peace talks with Iran hit a snag on Friday when Tehran reportedly postponed sending a delegation to Switzerland. The stated reason for the delay was ongoing Israeli military actions in Lebanon.
Switzerland’s foreign ministry confirmed that the planned discussions at the Bürgenstock resort would not occur but didn’t elaborate further.
The Iranian government pointed to military activities in southern Lebanon as the cause for this postponement, claiming it stems from Israel’s self-defense against relentless attacks from Hezbollah.
Earlier, the White House had announced that Vice President J.D. Vance had also delayed his trip to Switzerland due to Iran’s failure to meet its commitments. His team was actually on the tarmac, ready to board, when they learned of Iran’s no-show.
This situation led dozens of US diplomatic and security officials, as well as media personnel, to already be in Switzerland preparing for Vance’s anticipated arrival. Now, it seems the reason for the postponement has come to light.
An announcement followed a report from al-Mayadeen, a pan-Arab satellite channel linked to Hezbollah, stating that Iran was delaying its delegation due to Israel’s military operations.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency noted that Iranian negotiators were waiting to see indications of US compliance with the interim agreement before the next talks could be arranged, casting doubt on whether a delegation would go to Geneva at all.
The memorandum of understanding, which was signed by President Donald Trump, outlines a broad strategy to end hostilities and aims for a comprehensive agreement within 60 days. It calls for an immediate halt to military actions from both sides while committing to avoid future confrontations.
No new date has been set for the promised negotiations in Switzerland.
