‘Christianity was my Mamaw’: JD Vance shares his faith journey and decision to become Catholic

J.D. Vance’s Spiritual Journey Explored in New Book

In his latest book, “Holy Communion: Finding the Way Back to the Faith,” Vice President J.D. Vance shares an intimate look at his spiritual evolution. It details his journey from a youthful departure from Christianity, to a period of atheism, and ultimately his return to faith as a Catholic in 2019.

During a recent chat with BlazeTV’s Allie Beth Stuckey, Vance candidly discusses the highs and lows of his faith experiences. He reflects on the pain he felt when he lost his faith in Christianity and what eventually led him back to God through Catholicism.

Vance grew up mostly in the care of his Baptist grandmother, often called “Mamaw.” His childhood was steeped in Bible stories, Billy Graham revivals on television, and the occasional church visit—yet he describes it as both devout and “unchurched.”

After the death of Mamaw when he was 20, Vance felt that the faith she’d instilled in him vanished along with her. He describes how, “Two years later, I became an atheist…Christianity was Mamaw for me, and when that was gone…I had no real anchor in Christianity anymore,” illustrating the deep personal loss he felt.

Other influences also caused him to drift from faith. The evangelical church’s focus on cultural issues—like the Terry Schiavo case—didn’t resonate with him, especially during his difficult time of preparing for deployment to Iraq, coping with his grandmother’s death, and dealing with his mother’s serious drug addiction.

“Why are we talking about so many things? [Terri Schiavo] when there’s so much going wrong in your community?” He expressed frustration about feeling unheard by the church, emphasizing the need for Christians to pay attention to both public and personal issues affecting their communities.

Vance articulated a sense of betrayal during this tumultuous period, admitting, “There was an almost betrayed feeling… And again, was it completely fair? No, but that’s certainly part of the reason I lost faith.”

In contrast, Allie holds a different view. As a lifelong Southern Baptist, she appreciates the doctrinal consistency of evangelicals and their effort to integrate their faith with cultural perspectives. “If Christians don’t do that…we’re going to be in a very bad situation,” she noted.

Despite his past struggles, Vance eventually rediscovered his faith in a different tradition. After achieving success at Yale Law School, he felt a lack of fulfillment. He observed that the Christians around him appeared genuinely happy, which prompted him to ponder their perspective. “If they’re right about virtue, and they’re right about character…then maybe they’re right about Jesus, too,” he recalled.

This intellectual and spiritual exploration culminated in Vance’s conversion to Catholicism in 2019. His full story reveals his motivations and thoughts on choosing Catholicism over his earlier evangelical upbringing.
