17-year-old aspiring nurse dies in Sequoia National Park after being swept away by a current

A tragic incident occurred when a 17-year-old girl, Andrea Diaz Mondragon, slipped into a river during her first visit to Sequoia National Park. While at the park with her brother and friends last Friday, she was swept away by the current and drowned.

According to her family, her brother and a close friend attempted to rescue her as soon as they realized she had fallen in. Bystanders brought together their clothing to form a makeshift rope in hopes of saving one of the rescuers, while another person managed to reach the riverbank.

Andrea was described as someone who desired to help others, aspiring to become a nurse. A GoFundMe page set up by her family highlights her love for dancing, spending time with family and friends, and her caring nature. She was known for her outgoing personality and strength.

Andrea was about to begin her senior year at Pioneer Valley High School in Santa Maria, having just finished her junior year.

Her family emphasized the close bond they shared, noting how much she cherished her parents and siblings, especially her sister, whom she always protected.

This year, the Fresno Fire Department has reported 15 water rescues, with six resulting in fatalities due to drowning.
