Meta Suspends AI Training Program Following Data Leak

Meta Inc., under the direction of Mark Zuckerberg, has put its internal AI training program on hold after a leak of sensitive employee information, as reported through internal screenshots that surfaced recently.

The social media company has confirmed the suspension of its Model Capabilities Initiative, which had drawn criticism since its launch in April. This program was designed to gather data on employee activities, like keystrokes and mouse movements, to enhance AI models. However, it was found that private details of employees—such as conversations, performance reviews, and transcripts—were unintentionally made accessible across the organization.

This issue has been categorized as SEV 2 on Meta’s internal severity scale, where 0 reflects the most critical situations. A representative from the company acknowledged the breach and indicated that an investigation is currently underway.

“We’ve implemented this program with privacy measures in mind, and at this point, we don’t see any evidence that Meta employees compromised data. Nevertheless, we have suspended the initiative while we look into what happened,” the spokesperson stated.

Earlier reports have detailed the contentious nature of Meta’s AI training plan. The monitoring encompassed not only external platforms but also Meta’s own applications and other third-party services, such as Microsoft’s GitHub and Salesforce’s Slack. The list of monitored sites has been subject to change and had included AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

This data collection effort is part of Zuckerberg’s broader strategy to enhance Meta’s competitiveness in the generative AI market, where it faces tough competition from firms like OpenAI and Google. To bolster this initiative, Zuckerberg initiated a spending campaign last summer and recruited Scale AI’s Alexandr Wang to lead a dedicated team for developing foundational models.

Responses from within Meta to the data leak have shown considerable frustration among staff, with one employee openly expressing anger during an internal meeting following the news. “I’m furious,” they remarked, as seen in a screenshot, adding, “While there’s no proof of malicious access, the fact that this data wasn’t properly secured is hugely disappointing.”

The data breach adds to a list of recent challenges faced by Meta’s technology infrastructure. In May, a flaw in the company’s AI chatbot enabled hackers to take control of several Instagram accounts. Furthermore, an errant AI agent caused considerable disruption to business operations in early March.

As prominent tech companies like Meta navigate the complexities of AI development, challenges continue to arise, impacting their operational integrity.
