Kansas City Ends Free Bus Program
Kansas City has decided to discontinue its free bus program, which had previously inspired New York City’s socialist mayor, Zoran Mamdani, to implement a similar initiative offering free rides to commuters.
The city is reverting to a pay-as-you-go system as funds for free travel have run dry. What started as a $50 million experiment has now come to an end due to a shortage of funding.
The five-year trial of fare-free transit resulted in operating costs skyrocketing to around $15 million annually, nearly double the initial expectations, as reported by Bloomberg.
“This is my shocked face,” remarked Rich Azzopardi, who was involved in a rival campaign to Mamdani’s, upon learning of the program’s termination.
Azzopardi expressed skepticism about the economic viability of such initiatives, suggesting that it’s better for New Yorkers if this serves as another example of Mamdani not fulfilling his promises.
Critics had questioned the funding for Mamdani’s proposed free bus service from the beginning. As noted by Breitbart News, Mamdani first brought up the idea last year.
Initially, the Kansas City Regional Transit Authority estimated a loss of about $8.8 million in fare revenue per year when they became the first major U.S. city to eliminate bus fares back in 2020.
However, unforeseen costs and inflation ultimately pushed the true operating cost of the free bus network up to approximately $15 million annually.
Tyler Means, director of mobility and strategy for the Kansas City Regional Transit Authority, highlighted that funding and support were exhausted, leading to a reduction in service or a need to reinstate fares.
Is anyone really surprised by this outcome?
“Zero fares mean reduced service,” said public transportation planning consultant Jarrett Walker. He added, “Lowering fares will create a bigger hole and require even bigger service cuts unless the money is found elsewhere.”
In a statement that resonates with past discussions on socialism, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher notably remarked, “The problem with socialism is that eventually other people’s money is used up.”
