Trump Rescinds Housing Act, Pushing for SAVE Act

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump declared he has withdrawn the Road to the 21st Century Housing Act at the last moment, issuing a strong statement regarding the passage of the SAVE Act. He mentioned, “Today’s housing press conference and signing will be put on hold until we pass the essential Save America Act, which I view as a national emergency. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” via Truth Social.

House representatives passed the housing legislation on Tuesday with a significant vote of 358-32, demonstrating a shared sense of urgency to assist Americans struggling with housing affordability. The bill intends to increase housing supply by cutting costs and offering individual buyers an edge by restricting large institutional investors from purchasing single-family homes.

Early on Wednesday, Trump criticized the bill, referring to it as an “Elizabeth Pocahontas Warren-centric housing bill.” He suggested that “low interest rates are secondary and even FISA doesn’t compare to passing the American Rescue Act.”

The SAVE America Act, aimed at protecting voter eligibility, includes measures like voter ID and proof of citizenship, something Trump has consistently pushed for, especially with the midterm elections approaching.

After the cancellation of the housing act signing, House Speaker Mike Johnson held a press conference expressing his support for Trump’s decision, emphasizing the need to further election integrity proposals through the budget reconciliation process. Johnson mentioned his conversation with Trump, saying, “I spoke with the president for 20 minutes and then shared an impassioned speech this morning with House Republicans. He has made his priorities known regarding the American Rescue Act,” he stated, noting that the act passed several times in the House, with the latest version including requirements for proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote.

Johnson continued, “The core issue that 90% of Americans concur with is that a substantial number of Democrats also believe photo ID and citizenship should be prerequisites for voting in American elections.” However, he pointed out the need for enforcement, given that some blue states have not complied.

Amidst concerns over the SAVE Act’s future, Trump and others in his administration have highlighted its importance. He added, “I think that’s what everyone cares about: convincing the reluctant Republicans to approve it, or ideally eliminating the filibuster to get it through. It’s critical, and I’ll be watching with tears in my eyes!”

The housing initiative comes after extensive negotiations between the House and Senate over proposed limits on private equity investors and a temporary ban on central bank digital currencies, a different issue being pursued by Republican advocates for privacy. The bill also aims to ease regulations around factory-built homes and streamline federal environmental reviews for them, encouraging local governments to support new housing developments and revise zoning regulations to tackle shortages.

With the median home price exceeding $400,000 nationwide, many Americans are finding it increasingly difficult to secure affordable housing.
