Carmelo Anthony’s Legal Appeal Update

A prominent group of civil rights attorneys has stepped in to assist Carmelo Anthony with his appeal regarding his murder conviction in the stabbing of fellow high school athlete Austin Metcalfe.

This team includes Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe, seasoned appellate attorney Russell Wilson, and civil rights lawyer Brooke Crews from the Ben Crump Law Offices. They recently announced their efforts to overturn Anthony’s conviction and the accompanying 35-year prison sentence, according to CBS News.

In a statement made on Monday, the legal team mentioned that they would explore the possibility of an independent trial to assess any mistakes that may have been made during the initial proceedings.

What’s notable is that they will be undertaking this case on a pro bono basis.

“In light of the conviction, our appellate team has been engaged to conduct a fresh review of the court records,” they stated.

They also expressed their respect for the family affected by these tragic events, acknowledging the pain that has resulted from the situation.

Anthony, now 19, received a 35-year sentence this month after being found guilty of first-degree murder in Texas for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Metcalf at a high school track event in Frisco in April 2025.

He indicated his intention to appeal within a day of the verdict.

Currently imprisoned in Texas, Anthony claimed in court documents that he lacks the financial means to afford legal representation for his appeal, even though his family has successfully raised $625,000 through crowdfunding for his legal and living costs.

Details Surrounding the Incident

During a rain delay at David Kuykendall Stadium, Anthony and Metcalf had a confrontation while Anthony was in the tent belonging to Metcalf’s opposing team. Metcalf repeatedly asked him to leave, but Anthony allegedly responded with threats.

Witnesses reported that when Metcalf pushed Anthony, he drew a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest.

Metcalf tragically succumbed to his injuries while in his twin brother’s arms.

Anthony’s defense claimed self-defense was the justification for his actions, but the jury took just over two hours to convict him of murder.

The case gained national attention, leading to racial tensions as some supporters of Anthony sought to depict Metcalf, who was white, in a negative light as a bully targeting Anthony, a Black teenager.

It’s important to note that an appeal doesn’t guarantee a new trial, and this process may extend over several months.
