NYC Democratic candidate Aber Kawas faces criticism for old comments about 9/11

Laura Ingraham: New York Democrats Have Chosen a Controversial Candidate

Laura Ingraham has commented on the New York Democratic Party’s selection of radical candidates, specifically highlighting one she refers to as “mini-Mamdani.” This candidate is seen as supporting what Ingraham describes as a “radical overthrow of America.” There’s been an observable shift towards a more progressive ideology within the party, which has even affected established figures like Hakeem Jeffries.

Another far-left candidate, supported by socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani, has also drawn criticism. This stems from a resurfaced social media video where she implied that America brought the September 11 attacks upon itself.

Aba Kawas, the daughter of undocumented Muslim immigrants, is currently in the running for New York State Senate District 12. Like Mamdani, Kawas identifies as a socialist.

In a podcast interview from 2017, she stated, “The system of capitalism, racism, white supremacy… and Islamophobia have all been used to colonize land and take resources from other peoples. So it’s been a long road, and we’re seeing a manifestation of that continuation on 9/11.”

After her comments stirred controversy, she attempted to downplay the remarks.

Democrats Unite with Radical Streamer Who Made Controversial Claims

Kawas said, “The idea that we have to apologize for terrorist attacks committed by a few people, but there is no apology or reparation for genocide or slavery, to me is reprehensible.” In a November 2025 interview, she characterized her earlier comments as taken out of context by the political right, referring to them as “well-chosen comments.”

She contended, “I have always been outspoken about the unfair scapegoating of Muslim Americans, both before and after 9/11. In this interview, I addressed the harmful notion that Muslims need to apologize for acts of violence that have nothing to do with them.”

Kawas further emphasized that her recent success demonstrates that the people of Queens reject such slurs and desire a leader who is unafraid to confront bigotry and racism.

As a community organizer and Democratic Socialist who makes the plight of Gaza a central campaign issue, Kawas stated, “Another world is possible,” referencing a hopeful vision for Gaza.

Interestingly, she is also linked to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has faced accusations of being a terrorist organization in various U.S. states and abroad.

Controversial Candidate Emerges Victorious in Democratic Primary

Her father, Abdelkareem Khawas, originally from Jordan, came to the U.S. on a tourist visa in 1989 but remained illegally. His history includes a conviction for real estate fraud and subsequent deportation.

Kawas has made her father’s story a focal point of her campaign, framing it as a narrative of victimization by immigration authorities.

New York State Senate District 12, located in western Queens, including Astoria, leans heavily Democratic. Kawas faced Democratic Rep. Stephen Raga in the primary, a contest she won decisively. The current senator, Michael Gianaris, plans to step down at the end of his term.

In such a strong Democratic district, Kawas is well-positioned for a win in the upcoming November election, likely leading her to Albany in January.
