Socialists Claim Victory in New York City Election Amid GOP Concerns

The Democratic Socialists recently achieved notable success in the New York State House primary, pushing for progressive policies that some Republicans view as extreme. Leading the Republican response, Mike Johnson, the party chairman, characterized these candidates as “Marxists,” raising alarms about the Democratic Party’s leftward shift. The electorate seems to support bold initiatives like Medicare for All and the abolition of ICE, sparking debates about the party’s future.

In a related note, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old Democratic Congressional candidate, backed by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, has a controversial background linked to a university group calling for the total dismantling of Western civilization. She referenced her role in launching Columbia University’s Apartheid Divest campaign in a recent op-ed. Interestingly, a past post from the group, now deleted, explicitly stated their aim to eradicate Western culture.

Chevalier returned to Columbia in May 2024, wearing distinct attire linked to the group she established, CUAD. The group’s controversial activities stirred significant backlash, including towards their expressed solidarity with liberation movements in the Global South. In a now-removed public statement, they rejected all regimes seen as undermining colonized peoples.

Many notable figures, including Hasan Piker, have voiced support for Chevalier, who is often associated with anti-American sentiments. After her affiliation with CUAD became public, it led to some misgivings even among fellow Democrats. Senator John Fetterman voiced his concern, labeling the situation as anti-Israel and anti-Western, questioning why he seems to be the only Democratic senator speaking out against such ideologies.

Furthermore, Chevalier, who was born to Dominican immigrants in Florida, faced criticism for offensive remarks she made that were later deleted, notably regarding her view of the U.S. as a “terrible disgrace.” Alongside this, her comment about wiping her hands on the American flag in a moment of forgetfulness triggered further controversy.

As the Democratic primary elections unfold, it’s clear that figures like Chevalier, amid Mamdani’s influence, represent a vocal and transformative left within the party. The upcoming November elections will likely showcase her continued momentum in a heavily Democratic district.

Fox News Digital has attempted to contact Avila Chevalier’s campaign for further comments.
