Mets fans share their thoughts on Carlos Mendoza's dismissal

Mets Fans React to Carlos Mendoza’s Firing

Reactions from Mets fans about Carlos Mendoza’s dismissal ranged widely, with one saying, “He can’t be overlooked,” while another declared, “Mendoza was irrelevant.” His firing on Friday morning came after the Mets posted a disappointing 34-47 record, the worst in the NL East this season.

The decision, made by owner Steve Cohen, ignited discussions online about whether Mendoza was genuinely to blame for the team’s struggles or if he was simply being used as a scapegoat. “I don’t understand firing Mendoza,” one fan expressed on X. “Did he say that? [Juan] Soto doesn’t hit the ball? Did he make six errors in one game on the field?”

Clearly, Mendoza faced significant challenges during his time, including a two-month injury to star player Francisco Lindor, inconsistent pitching, and a host of mistakes both on and off the field.

It’s worth noting that he wasn’t the one who constructed this high-priced roster, estimated at about $320 million. That responsibility fell on President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.

Another fan voiced their frustration, stating, “Owner Steve Cohen and his wife should be fired, along with the nerdy GM who got rid of a fan favorite for nothing!” They criticized the team’s decisions, mentioning that signing Lindor was a mistake since he’s never led the team to victory.

“Stearns should be fired, not Mendoza,” a third fan chimed in. Stearns has been pivotal in the decision to trade or cut notable players like Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil.

Despite the Mets being among the teams with the second-highest payroll in MLB over the last two seasons, those expenditures haven’t resulted in strong performances, leaving the team significantly underachieving.

One fan summed it up: “Stop saying Mendoza doesn’t deserve this. The team is lifeless. Last year’s team felt the same way. A coach might get a pass if they’re treated poorly, but good coaches know how to turn things around. I don’t hold Mendoza at fault more than Stearns—honestly, they’re both trash.”

Curiously, another user noted, “It’s about time!! This organization finally takes responsibility!”

Regardless of their specific views, there seems to be a consensus among Mets fans that Mendoza was a “good baseball person” and maintained a level of professionalism throughout his tenure.
