A North African migrant was apprehended in Spain on Thursday after allegedly attacking his Senegalese neighbor with a hammer.
The accused, an Algerian man, reportedly intensified prior verbal disputes. Around 6 PM local time, he, alongside two other Senegalese men, was involved in a physical confrontation in Torre Pacheco, La Verdad reported. It’s claimed that he not only swung a hammer at one neighbor’s head but also struck another in the neck with a broken bottle.
Eyewitnesses recorded the chaotic scene and contacted the police, who arrived promptly. The video captured a victim lying still on the ground, bloodied. Following the incident, local authorities arrested the suspect, while the injured man was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.
This alarming event occurred less than two weeks after Spain processed approximately 900,000 applications from undocumented migrants asking for legal citizenship.
“The fear in our streets grows more indescribable each day,” remarked Santiago Abascal, the leader of the Spanish nationalist party Vox. In a post on X, he added, “Aside from the betrayal of a political class that seems intent on transforming Spain into a battleground, we aren’t compelled to coexist with this violence.”
He advocated for “deportation, re-immigration, and putting the nation first, along with holding accountable the politicians responsible.”
This isn’t the first instance of such violence in a small Spanish town. In July 2025, according to the BBC, three young North African migrants were arrested after allegedly beating a 68-year-old man, sparking riots in a town of about 40,000 residents.
As Spain prepares to manage a significant influx of citizenship applications, the European Parliament is expected to approve new immigration restrictions aimed at facilitating deportations. In June, Parliament voted 418-218 to introduce restrictions, with some lawmakers calling for stricter measures.
