Mayor Pledges Support for Haitian and Syrian Immigrants
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has vowed to stand by Haitian and Syrian immigrants following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Trump administration’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for many of them.
In a video message, Mamdani criticized the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling, expressing concern that it “puts the lives of too many people at risk.” He emphasized that New Yorkers “stand in solidarity with everyone affected” by this ruling.
Mamdani described the situation as “cruel,” arguing that it’s unfair for those who have advocated for freedom around the world to see their own rights jeopardized. The New York Post reported on his remarks.
“As many of you know, this city is home to 8.5 million people, over 3 million of whom are immigrants, including me,” he stated. “We are proud of our immigrant heritage. When we reflect on the suffering that Haitian New Yorkers have faced—not just in recent weeks or months, but for decades—seeing their freedom threatened by the Supreme Court and federal government isn’t just cruel; it’s something we simply won’t accept.”
Mamdani noted that the Supreme Court’s ruling confirms that “Congress created TPS in 1990 to provide short-term humanitarian relief to individuals unable to return safely to their home countries.” The ruling also states that the TPS Act does not permit any judicial review regarding the termination of TPS.
The TPS Act clearly prohibits consideration of defendants’ constitutional claims. It allows for “no judicial review of…decisions regarding termination” of TPS designations.
In his press release, Mamdani remarked that the Supreme Court’s decision would create “tremendous distress across the five boroughs.” He assured that “no one will face this situation alone,” reinforcing that his administration supports immigrant New Yorkers now and in the future.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, several Democratic lawmakers criticized the decision. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-New Mexico) accused the Trump administration of aiming to “create the largest population of illegal aliens possible.”
“This administration’s goals don’t focus on good policy or what’s right for America,” Menendez remarked. “Instead, their aim is to cause as much harm as possible to our immigrant neighbors and to remove as many immigrants as they can from this country.”
Stansbury expressed her disappointment, stating, “Today, we witnessed the Supreme Court siding with an administration that seeks to strip hundreds of thousands of American families of basic human rights protected by international law.”
