Trump's influence is put to the test in Louisiana Senate Republican runoff

President Donald Trump’s significant influence over the Republican Party is about to be tested again as Louisiana holds its Senate primary runoff elections on Saturday.

Six weeks have passed since Trump backed against Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who faced defeat in his attempt for a third term. Republican voters in the traditionally red state will now choose between U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming for the vacant seat.

If Letlow secures victory in the runoff, it would add another win for Trump, who aims to bolster Congress with loyal supporters during his last two years in office. Conversely, a win for Fleming would mark a notable setback for Trump, representing his third loss among high-profile endorsements this primary season.

Following his conviction during impeachment, Cassidy was defeated, marking a significant shift within the party.

Letlow initially gained Trump’s backing before her candidacy in January, earning around 45% of the primary votes, with Fleming trailing at roughly 28%, while Cassidy gathered just under 25%. As no contender achieved the required 50% threshold, Letlow and Fleming progressed to the runoff, making Cassidy the first Republican senator to lose reelection since Sen. Richard Lugar in 2012.

Trump celebrated Cassidy’s defeat, expressing on social media that he was pleased to know Cassidy’s political career had effectively ended.

After conceding, Cassidy addressed his supporters, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of democracy, stating one shouldn’t resort to pouting or claiming election fraud when results don’t favor them.

Meanwhile, Letlow emphasizes her strong backing from Trump during her campaign. She previously won her current seat in 2020 and was elected to Congress in 2021 after her husband’s untimely passing shortly after being sworn in.

Fleming, drawing on his experience as a former congressman and White House chief of staff during Trump’s initial term, portrays himself as the staunchest conservative in the race.

In the broader context of the midterm elections, the Republican candidate appears poised against either Jamie Davis or Gary Crockett, who are competing in the Democratic Senate runoff.

In recent months, Trump’s influence has been quite visible in various Republican primaries, leading to significant changes, not just in Louisiana, but also in races across Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas.

However, there was a hiccup in Trump’s recent success streak, as his last-minute backing of Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra in a gubernatorial primary didn’t suffice for a win in his bid to replace retiring Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Despite setbacks, Trump had a successful showing in South Carolina where his endorsed lieutenant governor emerged victorious in the gubernatorial primary.

In the face of challenges, Sen. Lindsey Graham also won a significant portion of votes, avoiding a runoff despite pressure from numerous contenders, including one who criticized his foreign policy decisions.

Trump’s endorsed candidates have seen mixed results in previous races. While winning a majority, one setback occurred against a wealthy businessman who invested heavily in his campaign.

In Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore, a known Trump supporter, won against Jared Hudson, backed by some notable right-wing figures. Trump’s endorsement also helped Rep. Mike Collins secure a win in Georgia’s Senate runoff.

However, in Georgia’s gubernatorial runoff, Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Bert Jones fell short against outsider Rick Jackson, who ran a significant campaign.

On a positive note for Trump, Anthony Constantino, a businessman he endorsed, edged out Robert Smullen in a race to replace retiring Rep. Elise Stefanik in upstate New York.

As the dust settles, Trump’s endorsements, although sometimes met with resistance, continue to shape the Republican landscape significantly.
