UK Plans to Launch Asylum Program Similar to Ukraine's to Increase Migrant Numbers

The Labor government is set to implement a new scheme to bring in alleged asylum seekers to the UK, inspired by the initiative that welcomed many Ukrainians during their crisis.

Home Minister Shabana Mahmoud, who has positioned herself as a tough immigration official since taking the role last year, intends to create a different asylum pathway. This would allow businesses, community organizations, and universities to sponsor individuals recognized as refugees to enter the country, according to reports from the BBC.

The Times highlighted that this initiative builds upon the existing Homes for Ukraine sponsorship plan, which facilitated the arrival of over 200,000 refugees following Russia’s invasion in 2022.

The new plan seeks to provide a “safe” legal option for migrants, aiming to reduce the number of illegal crossings in small boats across the English Channel.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has presided over a record number of illegal Channel crossings, and it remains uncertain if these proposed left-leaning approaches will actually address the ongoing crisis.

The announcement raises questions about the future of Home Secretary Mahmoud, as speculation grows in Westminster that future chancellor Andy Burnham might dismiss her due to discontent within the Labor Party over aspects of the immigration reform. Notably, this reform could impose a time limit on refugee status and double the residency period required to qualify for permanent status from five to ten years.

Mahmoud defended her plans, stating they would prioritize “real refugees” and “close loopholes that are too often exploited.” She emphasized, “The UK has always provided protection to people fleeing war and persecution. However, this system can only remain viable if the public believes it is fair and managed.”

Nevertheless, some are skeptical about the UK’s ability to continue absorbing more immigrants, particularly with the significant number of newcomers over the past few years.

Conservative MP Katie Lamb expressed her doubts, saying, “Shabana’s plan to stop illegal immigration is essentially letting everyone in? This bizarre approach would mean ‘community groups’ sponsoring migrants, leading to increased chain migration. If they can’t enter legally, they’ll still attempt to cross the Channel.”

“They’re dodging the responsibility of securing the border,” she added.

Conversely, there’s a report indicating that if empowered, former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham would eliminate some of the restrictions imposed by Mahmoud, particularly the extended residency requirements and access to the welfare system.

Reform UK’s shadow home secretary, Zia Yusuf, cautioned that repealing these restrictions could result in 2.2 million immigrants receiving residency permits in the upcoming years, potentially costing British taxpayers £622 billion in benefits long-term.

Yusuf promised to replace Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) permits with a five-year work visa system akin to the US model. Nigel Farage’s party also plans to revoke residency rights for those reliant on state support, including individuals living in government-subsidized housing.
